In some indigenous communities in Taitung, senior citizens speak the Amis language, but cannot speak Mandarin. This is something Taitung hospital is looking to tackle by creating accessible resources in the Amis language. In the past, the language barrier has made collecting medical samples for health checks unnecessarily confusing. Doctors decided to create instructional videos and info-sheets in the indigenous language, making health care more accessible for all.

An ambulance frames the TV on the wall in Taitung Hospital. And the script of this instructional video turns the head of many passersby.

It''s spoken in the Amis language, and along with animations and music, explains how to take a test sample. Taitung Hospital serves a wide variety of ethnic groups. Some older indigenous citizens don''t speak Mandarin, and can get mixed up when taking medical samples. That''s why a team of five doctors decided to design this "mother tongue" instructional video course, using their own free time.

The videos might seem simple, but just translating them from Mandarin to Amis took two months. Later, adding subtitles was quite a challenge too. But the payoff makes hospital visits much easier for older indigenous citizens. It''s received the nod of approval from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, getting a top-class gong from among 26 hospitals competing for a creativity award.

But the team doesn''t plan to rest on their laurels. They''re producing more videos in more languages, and covering new topics, bringing health care more in alignment with the people it serves.
